I'm not in a position to know, but I'd always assumed it was because not only are Swifts among the fastest birds on the planet, but they're also very economical fliers, able to make tiny adjustments to the structure of their wings to optimize each beat.

They also have great "up time". An Alpine Swift currently holds the record for longest sustained non-stop flight by any bird — over 200 days!
