[swift-evolution] [Proposal] Factory Initializers

In Smalltalk we often used something like the following which is almost exactly what Jonathan suggested:
fromData: data
self subclasses
do: [:subclass | (subclass fromData: data) ifNotNil: [:instance | ^instance]].
^nil
The relevant feature being used here is the class method #subclasses which just returns a collection of the subclasses. The advantage here is that no special language feature is needed.
The order of the subclasses is given as depth first order with children being ordered alphabetically. Having a more powerful concept available here as suggested by Jonathan might certainly be useful in some cases.
